Bangor Business Awards Gala Evening
The Clandeboye Lodge was once again host to the sixth annual Bangor Business Awards, which took place on Thursday 18th May. Widely regarded as the number one showpiece business event of the year, it continued to show why it is held in such regard as more than 420 of the town’s business community attended the Gala Evening. The event raised a significant contribution to the Mayor's Pennant Appeal in the Charity Raffle. Revellers were entertained throughout the evening by comedian and star of the James Young tribute show ‘Our Jimmy’, William Caulfield and following the conclusion of the awards ceremony party goers danced the night away to the sounds of the Red Hot Roosters. With applications up by 44% on last year, the 2006 awards was the biggest award ceremony yet, highlighting the increasingly prosperous economic conditions in the town during a very competitive year. President of the Bangor Chamber of Commerce, Evan Ward began the evening by welcoming everyone present and adding that while not everyone could win, just to be nominated was recognition and reward for all the hard work that have helped make business thrive in the town. The Northern Bank, North Down Branch Manager, David Croft, stated that his company was delighted to once again be associated with the Bangor Business Awards and to be able to support local enterprises. He said, “These awards highlight the strength of the business community here and provide the opportunity for this success to be celebrated. The challenge we face is to ensure that achievement is shared well beyond the boundaries of the Borough.” He added “It is a credit to the organisers of these awards that such a prestigious event can be arranged, though more than this is a credit to the business proficiencies of everyone in this room.” Due to the significant number of applications each category was hotly contested with no category being more so than the inaugural Bangor’s Key Person of the Year Award, which was won by Lynsey Smith of DMS. This award was designed to recognise the unsung heroes of the business community, those who work behind the scenes ensuring deadlines are met and appointments are kept and that the company runs both efficiently and effectively. Lynsey won the award due to the judges' belief that she exceeded the role defined in her job description through her dynamic, flexible and reliable approach to work. Hosts of the evening, the Clandeboye Lodge, picked up two awards for Best Business Growth and Best Revamped Business, Thermomax also picked up a double, winning the Best Export Growth in Manufacturing and Tradeable Services and the People Development Award. The Streat Cafe won Best New Business and Shoebdoo won the Best Small Business. Winning the Commitment to Bangor Award was publican Ricky Donnelly who was singled out for being an integral part in reversing the negative image Bangor’s night time economy had developed a number of years ago.
