
Christmas 2007 worth £12 billion to retailers
Christmas for the majority of retailers is the most significant event in the retail calendar. For some it will equate to 60% of their annual turnover. The British Retail Consortium & Nielsen have put together the following festive facts: -
- Total sales of Christmas Goods are expected to reach almost £12billion this year, 5% more than 2006.
- The estimated value of sales of all Christmas-related groceries and other paraphernalia will reach £1.07 billion, 4% more than in 2006
- The average person will spend £435 on gifts, 12% more than the previous year.
- The most popular gifts will be clothes, books, films and music.
- The average household will spend approximately £169 on Christmas food and drink, up 4% since 2006.
- The average cost of Christmas Lunch will rise from £14 to almost £16 per head.
- The number of fresh Christmas Trees sold will drop to £1.3million. A drop of almost 9%.
- Christmas decorations sales are expected to reach almost £28 million.
- Sales of Christmas Crackers are expected to rise by 30% to £25 million.
- Turkey sales will be up 7% to an estimated £42 million.
- Brussels sprouts sales are expected to reach £12 million. 7% more than in 2006.
- An estimated £21 million of Christmas Puddings will be sold.
- £222 million will be spent on sales of assorted boxed chocolates.
- Sales of food hampers and gift selection are expected to reach £10 million this year. A rise of 4% from last year.
