Get Home Safe Project Launched

December 2006

Just in time for the Christmas parties and the annual return of students and those working abroad, The North Down Community Safety Partnership have launched a “Get Home Safe” campaign.

Roberta Dunlop, Chairman of the North Down Community Safety Partnership said:

“At this time of year our evening economy gets especially busy and we want everyone to come into the town centre and have a good nights fun but most of all we want them to get home safe.

The Community Safety Partnership has funded a range of products that get the message across to the full spectrum of partygoers. Not only have we put out substantial banners but we are distributing information wallet cards, drink protectors, beer mats and specially branded lollipops.”

Gary Montgomery of the Town Centre Management company went on to comment:

“Bangor has a relatively safe town centre and can accommodate around 5000 customers when busy. Unfortunately it only takes one to cause trouble. However the town is more focused on creating a safe environment than it ever has been. The door supervisors are all receiving training through the Councils accredited course and have radio’s linking them to each other, the PSNI and the town centre CCTV system. We’re going to do all we can to ensure people come here for fun and get home safe.”

Further good news comes with notice that the PSNI are continuing to bid for special funding for the late night bus that leaves from High Street at 12.45am, 1.15am and 1.45am. Inspector Culbert of the PSNI said:

“The night bus is one of a number of ways to get home safely after a night out in Bangor.  I would encourage everyone to think carefully about how they intend to travel home after a night out and make sure they use legal transportation and ensure that they have a sober designated driver.  Local police will be patrolling Bangor to keep the streets safe and every member of the public has a role to play in ensuring that this is a safe and happy Christmas for everyone.

The message definitely is “Get home safe” this Christmas!
