Holywood Arts Trust

Jonny the Jig

Holywood Arts Trust, a charitable company set up in 2003, draws its membership from various community groups and organisations including the Residents Association; Conservation Group; Chamber of Commerce; Bangor & Holywood Town Centres Ltd and elected members.

With financial assistance from Holywood Exchange, the Holywood Arts Trust has been able to commission a leading arts expert to produce a Public Art Strategy for the town and surrounding area.

The strategy has two principal aims:

  • To celebrate Holywood’s existing townscape and artworks and to develop their use as important cultural, educational and visitor resources,
  • To commission new art works which will further enhance the image of the town, contribute to the quality of life of local people and become additional cultural, educational and visitor resources.

Why Public Art?

By implementing the recommendations put forward in the strategy document it is hoped that the commissioning of public art will help to:

  • develop Holywood’s cultural profile locally, nationally and internationally
  • enhance local distinctiveness and sense of place and through this develop civic and community pride
  • encourage people to value their surroundings
  • enrich the cultural life of the town, improving the quality of life for local people
  • provide a focus and stimulus for visitors.
  • contribute to the process of Peace and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland.

Towards The Future

The commissioning of over ten pieces of public art for Holywood is definitely a mammoth undertaking for Holywood Arts Trust.  The Trust will be working with the Arts Council and other corporate sponsors to produce what will eventually become a ‘Walk of Art’ bringing a new and dynamic artistic dimension to Holywood and the surrounding area.
